We make a lot of default choices, in selecting the products and services we use daily. Changing these defaults is key to accelerating the adoption of sustainable alternatives. Without this, we will struggle to cope with the climate crisis.
Our schools and colleges have very rigid ways of teaching, which have remained largely unchanged for a long time, and are ill-suited to the needs of today's learners. But without alternatives, many students will continue to choose this path even if it leads them nowhere. Only if we create new courses, institutions and teaching methods will the outcomes get better.
India may once have lived in its villages but these days, more and more people are moving to a few large cities in search of better lives. The administrative and technical solutions to this emerging challenge are known, but we must also put together the social and political responses that are necessary to make many more places livable.
